The primary role of the Navy personnel and infrastructure at Garden Island is to support the Fleet so that the ships forming the Fleet are ready and able to undertake those tasks required of them by the Government on behalf of the people of Australia. The support provided at Garden Island includes maintenance support, port services and administrative functions.
Garden Island is the homeport to major fleet units based on the east coast of Australia as well as a port for visiting foreign naval ships. The ships, both Australian and foreign, add to the character of the harbour and bring financial advantages to local business. The Headquarters of the Maritime Commander Australia, who has command of the Fleet, is also situated at Garden Island, along with workshops and officers to support the Navy. |
